How to Enter Tibet?

By Air:
A twice-weekly flight operates between Kathmandu and Lhasa (Air China) from the beginning of April through October and sometimes till November depending upon the weather conditions. The 55 minute flight offers spectacular views of the Himalayas and the southern Tibetan plateau. At times on Thursdays, the airline operates additional flights during the months of July, August & September depending upon the load factor. There are two flights daily from Chengdu to Lhasa & vice versa.

By Overland:
An approach that has great appeal for hardy and adventurous travelers is to enter or leave Tibet by road. Nominally, organized tours must be arranged before you enter Tibet. Moreover to get into Tibet from outside Tibet from Chengdu or Kathmandu you have to book a so - called 'tour.'

How to Get Tibet Visa & Permit?
All foreigners except citizen's of China (including Hong Kong, and Macau), are required to obtain a visa and special permit before traveling to Tibet. In addition to the visa, it is necessary to obtain an aliens' travel permit better known as the "Tibet Travel Permit" for travel in Tibet. Group Size need to be 2person. Tibet Visa issued by Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.

The visa for China must be obtained in the respective country from where the clients are residing for - this is especially for fit travelers. In Kathmandu the visa processing days are Monday, Wednesday & Friday only. The passport must be deposited on any of these days between 10 to 11 am & will be returned after a week.

Visit Nepal-Tibet Treks arranges Visas and Entry Permits. They will need to have your tour confirmation and your passport details (Name, Sex, Nationality, Date of Birth, Passport Number, Occupation) for submittal to TTB.

How is the Currency of Tibet?
Renminbi (RMB). The basic unit is the Yuan. The exchange rate is about USD 1 = 8.278 CNY (approx.) Banks in Tibet/china are closed on Saturday & Sunday. So, you are kindly requested to carry about Few Hundred USD per person in cash over and above the tour cost to cover your extra expenses for main meals and others enroute until Lhasa. If it is cash dollars, even local people help you to get them exchanged in Chinese Yuan. Traveler’s cheques & credit cards are very difficult to be cashed outside the banks especially outside Lhasa

What is the best season for Tibet?
April to October is the high season in Tibet, although, many festivals and tours are organized in the off season. You may find even more comfort and hospitality, as there are fewer tourists.

What are the Major places to Visit?
Lhasa, Shigatse, Lhatse, Gyantse, Mt.Kailash & Mansarovar etc.. There are lots of places to visit but all those are well known places.

What medicine I should bring for altitude?
In addition to the normal medications for traveling recommended by your doctor, you should bring some thing to prevent symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Take time to acclimatize, drink lots of water and bring purification tablets. People suffering from heart, lung and kidney diseases should consult a physician before traveling to Tibet.

What should I bring in Tibet?
Sunglass, Sunhat, necessary cream for skin, Good walking shoes, sleepers, warm enough clothes, Books to read, Nice & easy light pack, sometimes you might need to walk cause of road & weather condition.

Dos & Don'ts in Tibet!
• Do not smoke, drink alcohol or make unnecessary noise in monasteries.
• Do not touch, walk over or sit on any religious texts, objects or prayer flags in monasteries.
• Do not kill or because anything to be killed in monasteries not be intrusive when photographing monasteries especially when people are performing religious ceremonies.
• Always ask for permission.
• Do not try to harm vultures, and yaks and sheep wearing red, yellow or green cloth.
• Do not step on the threshold when entering a Tibetan house.
• Do not spit before somebody.
• Don't put trash in the fire.
• Do not engage in public displays of affection.
• Do not wear shorts!
